I've been teaching this lesson for quite some time now and it's been a hit in my classroom. I like to give each student a small tub of play dough and a rock because I've found that it's most effective when they can actively participate in using them. For those of you doing distance learning, don't worry - I've got you covered! At the end of the slideshow, I've included an easy, no-cook recipe for play dough just in case there is none on hand.
The lesson itself is interactive and self-directed. Its main goal is to help students identify two types of problems - play dough problems (ones you can change) and rock problems (ones you have to cope with). To make it more engaging, students get to practice dragging and dropping different situations onto the play dough tub or the rock.
Once they've got the hang of it, move on to learning about coping skills. Students decode the skills and search for more in a word search. And finally, it's time for some self-reflection. Students will type out how they handled different problems, identify whether they were rock or play dough problems, and describe how they managed to deal with them. To make it even more fun, there's a spinner to indicate how they felt and a drag-and-drop rating system to show how big the worry or problem was.
To keep the learning going, I've also included printable activities for students to try out. So go ahead and have some fun!
